Leadership

To achieve our goal of improving access to justice DLA Phillips Fox plays a leading role in building a stronger pro bono culture in the legal profession.

Specifically we:

  • Work to remove the significant regulatory and professional indemnity barriers facing in-house lawyers and government lawyers undertaking pro bono work.
  • Work with law schools and students to instil a pro bono commitment in the next generation of practising lawyers. In particular, we participate in the 'Practising in the Public Interest' initiative of the Public Interest Advocacy Centre, by hosting classes of law students and accepting interns from university law schools to work in our pro bono department.
  • Contribute to thought leadership by writing articles for publication and participating as speakers in key pro bono conferences.
  • Offer full-time pro bono rotations and placements to our summer clerks and graduate lawyers to build a commitment to pro bono amongst our new recruits.
  • Fund legal positions at Community Legal Centres to build capacity in the community legal sector and to assist to relieve the burdensome effort required to secure and retain traditional sources of funding.

We also work closely with legal service providers such as Legal Aid, the community legal sector, professional legal associations, the National Pro Bono Resource Centre, the Public Interest Law Clearing Houses and other law firms to improve coordinated service delivery to pro bono clients.
