Garnaut's Final Report Released

The final report of the Garnaut Review, which was released on 30 September 2008, identifies a path to Australia becoming a low-emissions economy within 40 years.

The final report, which is more than 600 pages in length, covers a range of issues surrounding climate change, including emissions projections for Australia and globally, the impact scenarios in Australia and internationally, mitigation strategies and structural adjustment of the energy, transport and agricultural sectors.  It also contains the first results of economic modelling undertaken by the Garnaut Review in conjunction with Treasury.

Following the release of the final report, Professor Ross Garnaut articulated a number of challenges for Australia in moving to a low carbon economy at his Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA) address in Sydney on 3 October 2008.  Challenges he identified include our reliance on coal, our sensitive environment, and the economy's dependence on the export of raw materials.  The fact that Australia has the highest carbon emissions in the world per capita poses an additional challenge.
